Procter & Gamble is recalling Vicks Sinex nasal spray in the United States, Britain and Germany after finding it contained bacteria. The company said it announced the voluntary recall after finding the bacteria in a small amount of product made at a plant in Germany.

ALERT: Hospitalizations and Fatalities Cause a Massive Meat Recall

This week an E-coli contamination incident and consequential meat recall occurred at a processing plant in Ashville, N.Y. Fairbank Farms has issued a massive ground beef recall, affecting nearly 546,000 pounds of meat that was delivered to stores from North Carolina to Maine, according to a current Associated Press article.

ALERT: Jelly Belly Left Peanuts Off Ingredient List

Jelly Belly Candy Company is recalling 7.5-ounce cylinder-style packages of 49 Flavors Jelly Belly jelly beans because the package is incorrectly labeled. The mislabeled packages failed to list peanut butter and peanut flour in the ingredient statement. People who have an allergy to peanuts or a severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these ingredients.

Reglan Linked to Neurological Disorder

On Feb. 26, 2009 the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers against the “chronic use of metoclopramide-containing drugs [including Reglan] in order to treat gastrointestinal disorders.” The governmental organization stated that all companies now selling metoclopramide must add a boxed warning stating explicitly its potential effects when used in high dosages or over a long period of time.

Yaz Birth Control Pill Linked to Serious Side Effects

Yaz/Yasmin or Ocella, the birth-control pill made by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc., has been associated with increased risks of stroke, blood clots, gallbladder disease, and other serious injuries in women.

Women taking Yaz, which also is available in other formulations under the brand name Yasmin and generically as Ocella, have developed serious side effects including:

• Heart attack
• Rash
• Hives
• Difficulty breathing
• Chest tightness
• Vision problems
• Cancers of the reproductive organs and breasts
• Liver cancer
• Inflammation of the pancreas

ALERT: Coleman Heater Exploded

Coleman, the manufacturer of portable heaters, is being sued over an alleged defective heater. The family’s lawyers, Bisnar Chase, allegeds The Coleman Company knowingly made and sold a defective propane heater, the ProCat PerfecTemp (Model 5053). Trevor Dennis, 11, received severe burns all over his body, and they have resulted in permanent and disfiguring injuries. He was severely injured 4 years ago when one of Coleman’s propane heaters exploded and caused a fire to break out in the family’s camping trailer. The family has also incurred hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical treatment for the boy. Coleman has formally denied that its heater was defective. A jury will now get to decide whether Coleman had prior knowledge that its heater was dangerous. Trial begins next week in Orange County, California. The lawsuit also alleges that Coleman used a faulty design and had received numerous complaints about the safety of the heater in the past, but did nothing about trying to recall the product or at least warn the public.

ALERT: Zero Motorcycle Recall

Zero Motorcycles is quite a new company, specializing in high performance electric motorcycles. Just this week though, two rather new models have just been recalled due to a serious potential threat. The off- road 2009 Zero X and the Zero MX are the models that are being recalled. The problem is with a defective throttle that can become disconnected or get stuck in the open position, causing the bike to unexpectedly accelerate immediately after starting it up.
