Popcorn Lung
"Popcorn Lung" Linked to Flavor Additive in Microwave Popcorn
The FDA announced an investigation into diacetyl dangers light of renewed concerns about "Popcorn Lung", or Bronchiolitis obliterans, possibly being caused by a flavor additive in butter-flavored microwave popcorn.
"Popcorn Lung" Controversy
Re-igniting the "Popcorn Lung" controversy, a Denver doctor recently disclosed information on a patient suffering from Bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as "Popcorn Lung". According to the doctor, his patient's "Popcorn Lung" was likely caused by repeatedly inhaling popcorn vapors.
"Popcorn Lung" Symptoms
The symptoms exhibited by the patient are similar to "Popcorn Lung" symptoms typically found among popcorn factory employees. Symptoms of Popcorn Lung include dry coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
Treatment of "Popcorn Lung"
Currently there is no known treatment for "Popcorn Lung". Bronchiolitis obliterans is irreversible and severe cases require a lung transplant.
Cause of Bronchiolitis Obliterans
Bronchiolitis obliterans is caused by exposure to diacetyl. The disease, also known as "Popcorn Lung", is normally only found in microwave popcorn factory employees working.
What is Popcorn Lung?
"Popcorn Lung", or Bronchiolitis obliterans, is a rare and potentially fatal type of fixed obstructive lung disease. This is a dangerous disease that obstructs the lungs and inflames the bronchioles. This is the first known case of a consumer contracting "Popcorn Lung". A more accurate name than "Popcorn Lung" would be "diacetyl-induced bronchiolitis obliterans".
What is Diacetyl?
Diacetyl is a food additive used to create a buttery taste in microwave popcorn, as well as in other food and beverages. The industry association, "Flavor and Extract Manufacturers", recently recommended a reduction of diacetyl in butter flavorings. One popcorn company, The Weaver Popcorn Company, has already replaced the diacetyl in its butter flavoring with a new ingredient. ConAgra has promised to eliminate diacetyl from its products within a year.
