Vehicle To Vehicle Communication Set To Change The Face of Road Safety

The Department of Transportation recently announced plans that would drastically change the face of car safety in a positive way thanks to the implementation of a new program.

Vehicle to Vehicle communication is a new technology that’s estimated to avert up to 80 percent of automobile accidents.

The technology uses wifi-like technology to allow two vehicles to exchange non-personal information which essentially helps in instances of close collisions, merging and other risky road maneuvers.

Set To Change The Face of Road Safety

This new technology is set to change the face of road transport a la seat belts and airbags back in the seventies and eighties. With time, the Department of Transportation hopes that vehicle-to-vehicle communication, also known as v2v, will be a common thing on our roads, helping motorists navigate through traffic without fear of accidents.

Vehicle to Vehicle communication was developed by industry stakeholders, the government and academia and is a joint effort to ensure that interoperability across vehicles. At the same time, tests done in August 2012 point to the fact that the technology has high favorability ratings and exceptional levels of acceptance from individuals who took part in the testing.

Personal Data

There’s always the fear that driver personal data might be compromised. However, Vehicle to Vehicle communication does not store or transmit personal data. Additionally, it’s protected by layers of security settings meant to confirm that only vital vehicle movement data is being transmitted at any given time.

Situational Awareness

What’s also great about v2v is the fact that it provides the driver with 360 degree situational awareness, a tool which might be vital in evading collisions as a result of merging, or at intersections. The technology isn’t an excuse not to pay attention to the road while driving and will only serve as an adjunct to the driver’s intuition, common sense and spatial awareness.

Road accidents kill thousands of Americans each year; this new development may effectively bring down the number of car crashes, injuries and deaths and make our roads that much safer.
