Motorcyclist Critically Injures Pedestrian

According to a press release, a motorcyclist critically injured a pedestrian in New York. The release states that the motorcyclist was drinking before the incident and that he had ran a red light at an intersection. The motorcyclist was charged with driving a motor vehicle while impaired and with vehicular assault.

Unusual Accidents

Most of the time, traffic accidents involving motorcyclists involve the motorcyclist themselves being hurt or killed. In this case, a pedestrian was struck. Even though a motorcycle is considerably less massive than a car, motorcycles are still heavy enough to cause serious injuries when they strike a pedestrian.

The pedestrian in this case was crossing in a crosswalk when he was struck by the motorcycle. There are some features of this incident that make it different than the regular pedestrian/vehicle accident.

Motorcyclists tend to carry less insurance coverage than people who drive cars. Simply because there's less of a chance of the vehicle causing as much damage as a car would, many motorcyclists opt for the minimum amount of liability insurance. Some add extra medical coverage in consideration of the risks that go along with riding a motorcycle. Because of this, someone who is hit and injured by a motorcycle may find themselves with less money available from the rider's coverage for the medical injuries and property damage that the motorcyclist inflicted upon them.

Drinking and Motorcycles

Motorcycles are harder to manage on the road than cars. A motorcyclist needs faster reflexes, better judgment and has to be able to keep their balance on the vehicle. Alcohol and other drugs can cause impairments that make driving a motorcycle safely impossible.

When a motorcyclist hits, injures or kills someone, it may be necessary to file a lawsuit to get compensation sufficient enough to cover the medical and other expenses the accident caused.

No matter how unusual an incident involving a car accident or motorcycle accident may be, personal injury attorneys can find out what really happened. Vehicle accident reconstruction technology and knowledge allows them to figure out how an accident may have happened and how one of the parties involved may have been negligent. This, along with expert witnesses, if needed, can sometimes persuade a jury to hand out an award in consideration of what the plaintiff has been put through. No matter what type of vehicle caused an injury or death, attorneys can figure out the circumstances of the accident and if negligence was involved.
