Identifying Threats on the Road

Identifying Threats on the Road

Many of the people who contact a Dallas vehicle accident attorney do so because of another driver’s negligence. Negligence is when someone fails to take the reasonable precautions that could be expected of anyone to safeguard others and when someone is hurt as a result of that. There are ways, however, that you can lessen your chances of ever needing a vehicle accident lawyer, and they start by noticing negligent drivers before they cause you to come to harm.

The Distracted Driver

If you see a driver looking at anything other than the road in front of them, they’re a threat. They may be talking on their phone, looking at their GPS, texting someone or talking to their passenger. Be sure you keep wary of such drivers. Even when you’re travelling at a slower speed, your car moves many feet in the space of a second and there isn’t always time to react to something in front of you. These drivers are usually negligent in that they don’t take this into account when they’re driving.

The Angry Driver

If someone gives you "the finger" or makes another rude gesture, yells at you through their windshield or harasses you on the road in some other way, let them go by and don’t get into a confrontation with them through your own windshield. This distracts you from the road and, worse, it gets you angry, which means that your body starts coursing with adrenaline. Adrenaline is all about fight or flight. When you’re driving, you need to be thinking. These drivers aren’t thinking; they’re spoiling for a confrontation and are endangering everyone else on the road in the process. Just let them go on their way and forget about it.

The Drunk Driver

This is the most dangerous driver of all. Intoxicated, disoriented, distracted and oftentimes angry, they’re every negligent type of driver embodied in one huge threat. Watch out for sudden stopping and starting, jerky turns, signals that never turn off or that are never turned on and constant distraction on their part. These drivers are very real threats. Your best bet is just to let them go on their way and to stay out of theirs at all costs. They’re going to hit something or someone eventually, and you don’t want it to be you. If you’re sure that they’re driving drunk, it’s a good idea to call them in. Don’t try to stop them on your own.
