In drunk driving cases, damages are awarded for many different reasons. The basic idea behind any lawsuit is to provide a way for somebody who is wronged because of someone else's negligence to get compensation for the expenses that they have endured. Damages are awarded for other reasons, as well, some of which are not as easy to quantify in dollar amounts. Here are some basics.

1: Property Damage

Property damage is one of the first things that an attorney will consider when they are preparing a lawsuit. Ideally, they will be able to get you compensated for all of the property damage you suffered and, if necessary, also get enough compensation to help you repurchase any property you lost, i.e. your car.

2: Medical Expenses

This is another category that attorneys will look at right away. If you had to go to the hospital to have injuries treated and have ongoing medical expenses that are direct results of the accident, your attorney will likely advise that you seek compensation for those expenses. After all, you wouldn't be facing those expenses if it weren't for the negligence of the drunk driver.

3: Lost Wages

Most people live check to check these days. Because of that, one of the worst things about any sort of a debilitating accident or injury is the fact that people end up losing pay that they're depending upon to pay their mortgage, rent, food bills and so forth. Your attorney will calculate the amount of wages you lost as a result of the accident and the earning power that you have lost going forward as a result of the accident in the total amount that they seek.

4: Pain and Suffering

This is the category that's very difficult to quantify in dollars. Your attorney will help you to do this. This is not frivolous and this is not an instance of people looking for easy money. Some people who are involved in car accidents with drunken drivers end up losing loved ones, losing limbs, being permanently disfigured or being unable to pursue the career that they've relied upon to support them after the wreck. Pain and suffering are very real things and, in many cases, the victims of drunk drivers deserve compensation for them.

A Dallas car accident lawyer can give you vehicle accident articles and other information about drunk driving wrecks and how compensation works.
