Hot Weather Driving Tips

Hot Weather Driving Tips

When you're driving in hot weather, you need to be aware of the fact that certain factors become greater threats than they would normally be. For example, you may find yourself:

  • Getting dehydrated
  • Getting overheated
  • Losing your temper
  • Developing headaches from heat and humidity
  • Getting ill from heat sickness
  • Having eye irritation from bright sun on the road

Here are some things you can do to avoid being miserable on the road.

1: Bring Water

Make sure you have plenty of water with you in the car. It doesn't matter if it's cold or not; any water will help. If you're drinking dehydrating drinks such as coffee or soda, you're going to feel the effects compounded in a hot car. Be sure you're ready for those effects and that you bring enough water to cool off.

2: Calm Down

Plan ahead, give yourself time to get to your destination and don't get frustrated and angry on the road. It's summer; there will be delays. Keeping your cool means more than keeping your body temperature low!

3: Have Your A/C Charged

Air conditioning can make a hot car tolerable. Remember that it's dangerous in cars when the temperature gets very hot and Dallas most certainly gets hot! Turn on the A/C to give your body a break.

4: Pull Over if You're Ill

Symptoms of being overheated include:

  • Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Disorientation
  • Exhaustion

If you experience these symptoms, get off of the road and get into somewhere cool. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be fatal. It's easy to be overcome in a car when you're stuck in traffic and the temperature gets too high. Even if it means being late, pull over and cool off.

5: Leave your Pets at Home!

Your pets do not belong in a hot car. They cannot cool themselves off when there's only hot air to breath, such as the case in a car or truck. If you do have to bring them to the vet or another destination, only do so in an air conditioned car and cool off the car with the A/C before you bring them into it. If you want an idea of what a hot car is like for your pet, imaging wearing a winter jacket in hot car.

Stay safe this summer! If you're injured in a car wreck, call a Dallas car accident lawyer.
