Homecare and Senior Neglect

Homecare and Senior Neglect

Elderly neglect caused by homecare workers can be one of the most dangerous of all situations. When this happens in a nursing home, the victim at least has the advantage of there being a lot of other employees around who, hopefully, will notice that something is wrong. When the elder is isolated in their own home, it may be very hard for them to communicate to someone that something is wrong. There are some things you can do to make it easier for them.

Ask Questions

You don’t have to put them on the hot seat, but do take the time to ask your loved one about the quality of the care they're receiving. In some cases, they may be very happy with it and talk about the various workers that come over with a lot of respect. It's not uncommon for them to develop a deep bond with one of the workers. If they seem hesitant, however, listen closely to what they're saying. They may not want to say anything directly, so you have to be aware if they're indicating something is wrong without saying so in plain English.

Talk to the Worker

Be sure to talk to the worker and see what kind of a feeling you get off of them. Most of them are very professional and, in some cases, they may be a bit clinically detached, but this isn't a bad thing. Pay attention to whether they seem impatient or unhappy with their work, however. This doesn't mean abuse, but you want someone who is dedicated to what they do for a living and to the people they serve.

Keep in Touch with the Agency

Whenever you have questions, be sure to contact the agency. If something doesn't seem right with your loved one, make sure you let the agency know that you're not happy about the situation. Most of them don't want to end up being liable for negligence, so they'll usually act quickly if they get complaints. Make sure they're taking action and not merely trying to pacify you, however.

If it does turn out that there has been abuse and neglect going on, make sure you talk to a nursing home abuse lawyer about the matter. They can handle homecare agencies, as well. They may find that you have cause to file a legal action against the firm that may result in you and your loved one receiving compensation.
