27 Dec Child Left in Daycare Van for Second Time

A three-year-old child was found to have been left alone in a van in Tampa, Florida by a daycare for the second time. According to reporting, the child was left alone for approximately 4 hours. Bay News 9 reported that the child was picked up by the director of the daycare at approximately 8 AM and left in the facility's van.

This marked the second time that this same child had been left alone in a vehicle belonging to the daycare. The child was discovered by a child care licensing inspector who was visiting the daycare unannounced, according to the report. They contacted the mother, told her to come get her child and, according to the reporting, the mother now feels that something has to be done.

While it may seem odd that the mother brought her child back to the same daycare where this had happened before, she points out in the report that the bus driver who had left her child unattended in a vehicle in the first incident had been fired.

Inspectors and Violations

Parents need to have no doubts that state officials responsible for licensing daycares work very hard to make certain that they are upholding the law. Abuse in daycare still occurs, however, that abuse oftentimes does not take the form that people might expect. The media is typically quick to report cases where children are physically, psychologically or sexually abused in daycares, simply because communities have a right to know when this goes on. Some types of abuse, however, really come down to negligence.

While inspectors may be able to pop into a daycare unannounced once in a while and make certain that everything seems okay, they cannot be there all the time. Parents need to be aware of daycare centers that exhibit negligent behavior and they must be willing to remove their children from those facilities when a daycare facility is known to be negligent.

Following these incidents, parents may want to investigate the possibility of filing a lawsuit against the daycare facility. In some cases, the daycare owner or workers at the daycare center may be facing criminal charges, depending upon the nature of the abuse. In any case, it's incumbent upon parents to look out for one another's children and for those parents to make certain that they report any violations that they see to the appropriate authorities so that they can be remedied and the danger to the children eliminated.
