Another Nursing Home Abuse Case Discovered by Hidden Camera

According to WABC in New York, a woman who had her grandmother in a nursing home in the Bronx discovered abuse going on by planting a hidden camera in the room. The woman who was being abused suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and from dementia, two conditions which make it much easier for abusers to conceal what they’re doing.

The woman started to get suspicious when she noticed that her grandmother had bruises on her hands. The nursing home administration told her that the woman’s bruises were caused when she was banging her hands on the railings on her bed. The victim’s granddaughter, however, didn’t buy this and decided to hide a camera in a plant in the woman’s room.

After recording in excess of 600 hours of video on the camera, she saw the abuse going on. One woman who worked at the nursing home was arrested for an incident when she grabbed the elderly woman by the arm, twisted it and then slammed her into the bed.

When the granddaughter had confirmation of the abuse, she immediately requested that her grandmother be moved to a nursing home due to the danger to her life. There are criminal charges pending over the case.

Discovering Abuse and Taking Action

The woman who was being abused at this nursing home was obviously in danger. Elderly people, of course, tend to be frail and even a healthy person being slammed into a bed could suffer serious injuries. Having her grandmother moved to an emergency room was, without a doubt, a very smart move on the part of the granddaughter.

Planting a camera was also a smart move. As this case illustrates, sometimes nursing homes were abuse is going on will not be inclined to help anyone who suspects abuse and, in some cases, they may actually conceal abuse to avoid getting into hot water legally.

Nursing home abuse lawyers can help families whose loved ones have been victims of this type of abuse. The nursing home abuse attorney will have to establish that there was negligence that played into the abuse. Remember that any criminal charges being pressed against members of the staff at the nursing home or against the nursing home owner themselves have no bearing on whether or not you can file a lawsuit against the facility. Talk to an attorney about the matter if you need further clarification on your rights.
