3M Air Purifiers Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

If you have a Filtrete air purifier, manufactured by 3M, your device may have been recalled. The air purifiers are white, plastic devices that are powered by wall current. These devices have a two speed fan and there are two models affected. The Ultra Quiet air filter carries the model number FAPOO-RS. The second device recalled, the Maximum Allergan, carries the model number FAPOO-L. Check on the bottom of the product and look for a serial number beginning with E, F, G, H, I or J.

These devices were recalled because there have been two incidents reported to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. One incident involved one of these devices overheating. The other incident actually involved one of the devices catching fire.

The 3M Corporation will send a prepaid shipping box to any consumer with one of these devices and provide a free replacement to anybody affected by the recall. Contacting the 3M Corporation is the first step.

Recall Information

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission handles product recalls and, oftentimes, this product recalls are done in conjunction with the company that manufactured the devices. When the companies act responsibly, they will generally do what 3M did in this situation, which is to offer the consumer some sort of compensation – such as a free replacement or a part that they can use to fix a flaw in a device – and they will oftentimes send out notices to people who have registered the devices in question.

Sometimes, however, companies either fail to recall a device in time to avoid an injury or they deny the device causes any real risk to the user. In the latter scenarios, the government will sometimes sue the manufacturer over the issue. Those who happen to have been injured by a defective product also have an option to sue, and product liability lawyers can sometimes get such individuals appropriate compensation for their damages.

Getting a Lawyer

Getting a lawyer is the first step in filing a product liability claim. The lawyer will have to establish that there was some sort of a flaw with the device that fits the definition of defective in the legal sense of the term. They will also have to be able to establish that you were somehow harmed – physically, financially or otherwise – because of a flaw in the device. In a best case scenario, nobody gets hurt by defective device and it is recalled. Quite often, however, this is not how these situations play out.
