Your Child’s Umbillical Cord May Treat CP

Recent news is bringing light to a new potential treatment option for families whose children have cerebral palsy – if they knew to do something in advance. The idea: using a child’s own umbillical cord blood stem cells to stimulate growth and regeneration of damaged tissue.

Another potential possibility is using the stem cells of other children’s umbillical cord blood – possibly eliminating the need for families to have saved their child’s cord in order to receive such treatment. This is spurring controversy over whether people should donate their childrens’ umbillical cords for the greater population or whether private banks are a better option.
