ABM Practitioner Relates Success with CP Patient

A recent article in the Huffington Post related an Anat Baniel—a form of massage—practitioner's success dealing with a patient with very severe cerebral palsy symptoms. There are some success stories that involve using massage as a way to treat this disorder and it makes sense. Cerebral palsy oftentimes involves very painful and debilitating spasms and, of course, massage can address those directly.

Severe Case

In the woman's story, the patient, a 27 year-old man, had a lot of pain and stiffness issues. The woman managed to get him breathing more freely, to help him sit up straighter and, she says, to help him feel generally better.

Not everyone with CP has symptoms so severe that they end up needing to be in a wheelchair for their entire life, but the symptoms can still be very debilitating at times. Some people have intermittent spasms that respond to massage and other people need injections. This group of disorders is a neuromuscular one, so the symptoms can be very different between one person and the next. In fact, they can be radically different.

Degrading Abilities

The man profiled in the story can remember himself walking, but he uses a wheelchair full-time now. There are cases like these, where the symptoms of CP become worse, though the brain injury does not become worse on its own. The increasing number of treatment options available, however, bring a lot of promise with them that people whose conditions are degrading may get some relief. In fact, massage, hot and cold therapy, drug therapies and surgeries have advanced tremendously. With surgeries, some CP sufferers are able to alleviate many of their worst symptoms and to get a much higher quality of life because of it.

Birth Injuries

There are many different types of birth injuries that a child can suffer. The birth injuries that CP sufferers have endured involve the brain and, specifically, the part of the brain that controls the muscles. Even in less severe cases, the consequences can be dramatic. Movement is usually an issue and, in some cases, there is a level of cognitive impairment that goes along with the disorder.

Parents who find that their child was injured because of medical negligence may want to contact an attorney about the matter. There is a chance that filing a lawsuit could win the family compensation that could help with treatment expenses.
