The Rasansky Law Firm Secures $230K Award For Texas Access to Justice Foundation

Dallas attorney Jeff Rasansky, founder of the Rasansky Law Firm, and Amarillo attorney Jeremi Young, founder of The Young Law Firm, have received the first ever Cy Pres: Impact on Justice Award in recognition of the recent cy pres donation of $230,160 for the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.

The Impact on Justice Award, presented during the TAJF 25th Anniversary Gala on May 28, 2009, marks the first cy pres award given to the foundation. A cy pres award is a court-ordered donation to a charitable organization of the excess or unclaimed funds in a class-action judgment or settlement.

Mr. Rasansky and Mr. Young, previously a senior attorney at The Rasansky Law Firm, negotiated the 2007 confidential class-action settlement that resulted in the award.

"Community service and charitable giving has always been a hallmark of our firm," says Mr. Rasansky. "But this case represented a unique opportunity by allowing us to structure a settlement that not only benefited our own clients, but also provided significant legal aid assistance to those people in the state of Texas who may not otherwise have a chance for equal and fair justice." "Jeff and I strive to get justice for each and every client," says Mr. Young. "that same goal is the cornerstone of the TAJF, and we are incredibly excited to be able to help such a worthwhile organization."

The Texas Access to Justice Foundation, created by the Supreme Court of Texas in 1984, is the primary state-based funding source for the provision of civil legal aid in Texas. The organization is committed to the vision that all Texans will have equal access to justice, regardless of their income. The Foundation administers a variety of funding sources, which are earmarked to assist nonprofit organizations in providing legal aid to approximately 100,000 Texans each year.

After earning his law degree from the Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1990, Mr. Rasansky joined a downtown Dallas firm where he learned the legal tactics used by large insurance companies, hospitals and nursing homes. In 1994, he formed the Rasansky Law Firm. Since then, his firm has represented individuals in cases involving employment related business disputes, including breach of contract and fiduciary cases; overtime pay claims; and catastrophic injury claims, including medical malpractice, nursing home neglect, products liability, and serious vehicle accidents.

Mr. Young founded The Young Law Firm in 2007 while continuing his work on the case that led to the confidential settlement and TAJF cy pres award. Mr. Young focuses his practice on cases involving personal injury, medical malpractice, unpaid overtime, truck accidents, oil field injuries, and a variety of business litigation claims. A lifelong Texan, Mr. Young earned his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1999 after earning his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University.
