Tanker Truck Crash Shuts Down U.S. 220

A deadly tanker truck accident off of U.S. 220 in Roanoke, VA has left the interstate closed so cleaning crews could clean up the wreckage. Crews had to gain access to the site through Norfolk Southern Corp. property. Police spokesperson Aisha Johnson said that one body was found outside the truck and recovered from the scene. Nobody else was injured during the crash.

Apparently, the tanker was traveling north on U.S. 220 when it went over an embankment and caught fire. Roanoke Fire-EMS Deputy Chief Ralph Tartaglia said the tanker was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline when it crashed. He said he thought the driver had just filled up at a fuel facility. Because the fire was large and involved gasoline, crews let the fire burn itself out.

Police are not releasing the name of the company that owned the tanker or where the tanker was coming from or headed. Roanoke police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
